Japanese Shadona
Project type
Antique Asian Furniture
Date
1868-1912
Location
Japan
A One-of-a-kind masterpiece in craftsmanship, design and intricacy of a mater-craftsman is on full display on the entire piece. Dated to the Meiji Period (1868-1912) this one-off piece was almost thrown away until we rescued it, cleaned it and lovingly displayed for its immense beauty.
This piece arrived in South Africa via Japan in 1905, by German immigrants who lived in Japan between 1897 and 1905 and was in the Family up until 2024 when it came to NostalgiaNique.
A Japanese "shadona" cabinet is primarily used as a display cabinet, designed to showcase small decorative items like art objects, figurines, or other collectibles, often sitting on a table or raised platform due to its smaller size and intricate decorative features; essentially, it's a decorative storage piece for displaying treasured items with a focus on aesthetics.
