As two sisters running a small family business like Nostalgianique, we spend our days focused on breaking boundaries, building community, and curating pieces that hold onto beautiful memories. But today, as we look around our workspace and out into the streets of South Africa, it is impossible to separate our professional drive from our daily reality as South African women.
We cannot simply push sales, talk about Heritage Month, and ignore the thick undercurrent of fear and anxiety that follows us everywhere.
This fear is a quiet, heavy passenger in our daily lives. It is the hyper-vigilance of checking the rearview mirror when driving home. It is the cold spike of panic when one of us hasn't replied to a WhatsApp message by nightfall. It is the exhaustion of carrying a mental map of where it is safe to walk, work, and simply exist.
The Weight of a National Disaster

This anxiety is not irrational. It is the painful byproduct of a country where Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) has formally been declared a national disaster. Over the last few weeks, the news has been an unrelenting nightmare.
The recent, deeply alarming discovery of multiple women's bodies across Gauteng has shattered our hearts and intensified our collective panic.
According to recent crime statistics, nearly half of all reported violent crimes against women take place behind closed doors. This means the women walking into stores, workplaces, and boardrooms every single day are fighting invisible, terrifying battles just to stay alive.
Every headline feels like a warning. Every name makes us look at each other and ask the terrifying question: Who is next?
Standing Together in the Fight
We refuse to look away, and we refuse to let these names become mere numbers on a police report. As two women in business, we believe our platform must stand for something bigger than just transactions.
